The Generals’ journey to their current incarnation has been tumultuous. Originally a two-piece covers band named Tremmor, the band also performed as Carnation before forming their current line-up as the Generals. One thing that appears to have remained constant though is a love of music and in particular the mod scene of the 1960s. Their rather predictable influences list includes the Who and the Small Faces, but at least the lads wear this inspiration on their parka-clad sleeves, and this two-track release is an accomplished, polished one, more akin to the Kinks’ poppier elements than to the guitar-smashing likes of My Generation. On B-side Shine, they tell us that they don’t want to change the world. “Everybody makes a fuss, it doesn’t bother me that much,” sings David Cuthbertson. In true mod style, they’d rather just have some fun.
