They’re apparently not sure if they’re called Maps are Fiction, Maps is Fiction or Maps Equals Fiction, which could be a slight drawback to them achieving the word of mouth success this release deserves. Counting alt-rock royalty from Radiohead and Death Cab for Cutie to the dearly-departed Hope of the States as influences, Maps = Fiction tick all the right boxes from the get-go. First track Wolf Theatre Society opens with stormy, onrushing drums a la Helicopter by Bloc Party before the earnest, soaring vocals kick in over a fiery background of guitar and rhythm section. Second track Conversation has a fair slice of the dreaminess once delivered with such aplomb by the region’s former unsigned heroes, A Woman of No Importance, whilst the guitars that close the track give a hefty nod in the direction of Interpol.
