Troubadours Take The Sage

ThelateshowsThe Late Shows, Tyneside’s free annual culture crawl, returns for a sixth year on the 18th and 19th of May, with diverse events running across 55 venues over both nights. Last year’s episode saw performances from graffiti artists, breakdancing, interactive circus acts and even a civil war enactment take over both sides of the Tyne in celebration of the international event ‘Museums at Night’.

This year, the event will be graced by some of the region’s finest songwriters, performing into the small hours. On Saturday the19th, The Sage Gateshead and The Late Shows will be presenting a showcase of North East singer/song writers. Ernie Stafford, Ani Sandwith and Natasha Haws will each perform a session as part of ‘The New Rise of the Troubadours’ show.

‘The New Rise of the Troubadours’ is a celebration of an iconic venue - The Troubadour LA, and its success in providing a platform which acted as a springboard for many folk singer/songwriters in the 60s and 70s. The New Rise of the Troubadours will celebrate and showcase North East artists in the same way. Paying tribute to that movement in The Sage’s stunning Hall 2, The New Rise of the Troubadours event aims to gain similar exposure for our own local talent.

Opening the evening at 11.10pm Ernie Stafford will perform for his Final Year Project, as part of the Community Music BA Hons degree being delivered at The Sage Gateshead. At 11:50pm will be Ani Sandwith, a singer/pianist/songwriter and all-around renaissance girl. Ani creates her own unique sound, combining blues, soul and soft rock. Influenced by many artists, styles and eras, she uses her distinctive voice to explore a variety of genres, and puts her own individual stamp on every song.

Headlining at 12:30am is 'fingerpicky-sarcastic-ear-pleaser’ Natasha Haws. Following her sold-out EP launch at the Sunderland Minster and an appearance on BBC Introducing, Natasha will close the show before heading out on her first UK tour. Each artists will perform a specially-chosen cover to celebrate the Troubadour LA.

Tickets are available here, or on arrival @ £5.

Happy Birthday Tiny Lights!

TinyLightsRecordingsTiny Lights Recordings turns one in June, and they’ve got some special plans to celebrate. In the next couple of weeks, the label will be locking members of almost every band on their roster, which includes the likes of The Lake Poets, The Railway Club and O’Messy Life, in a secret bunker and not letting them out until they’ve come up with two awesome songs.

Those two songs will then be released as a ridiculously limited edition cassette single. Each single will be a genuine one-off with unique hand-drawn artwork designed by one of the artists involved with recording the songs, and if you’re a Tiny Lights VIP, you’ll get a special customised edition.

Stay tuned for more information about which songs will be on the single (clue, one’s a Springsteen cover), and when it’ll be released (clue, it’ll be June). There’ll also be a Tiny Lights birthday party too, details of which will be unveiled shortly.

Materia Junkies Returns Triumphant

MateriaJunkiesAfter the success of the launch night in May, Materia Junkies is back on Thursday 7th June at Venue in Sunderland. It is the only nerd club night in Sunderland that features live music, anime and videogames on Venue’s big screens, cosplay, and nerdy DJ’s playing nerdy tunes.

The Materia Junkies club night will take place on Thursday 7th June at 7pm and the first Thursday of every month thereafter. Entry to the club night costs £3 but those who come dressed as their favourite character will get in for £2. Drink prices start from £1 per bottle and £1.50 per pint.

From Leeds, Superpowerless are the Dr. Jekyll / Mr Hyde of the 8-bit chip tune movement. On record, elements of electronica, pop punk, dance and rock are lovingly fused to create catchy bouncy gems that get inside your head, and then cuddle your brain. Live, chaos abounds as Gameboys and guitars collide in a performance that could, possibly, usher in the end of the world.

Not only does Harley Likes Music like music, he is really rather good at it. Dual-wielding Nintendo DS, Party music is conjured with a flick of the stylus. Adventuring to Sunderland from Sheffield, this seasoned adventurer is going to be an absolute treat!

Returning to Sunderland after her triumphant performance at the SunnyCon after party, Evee Tales is a burlesque dancer based in Middlesbrough who has fused her act with her passion for story-telling, geek culture and fantasy.

B>E>A>K Flock To Kendal Calling

Beak Continuing the steady invasion of North East talent onto the bills (BIRD PUN ALERT) of festivals nationwide, bird-brained rockers B>E>A>K have been added to the bill at Kendal Calling. Already boasting the likes of Maximo Park, Hyde and Beast and The Lake Poets, Kendal Calling are adding brand-new area Tim Peaks Dinner. Starting life as a metaphysical diner on twitter and BBC 6Music, The Charlatans' frontman Tim Burgess created a virtual world of listening parties, tea  and happenings, and he'll be setting up for real for three days of fun in the fields, supplying the best in music, DJs, Q&A's, book readings, poetry and a place to enjoy a well-deserved cuppa.

Tim Peaks Diner will also serve up Kendal Calling’s exclusive breakfast cereal called Totes Amazeballs, with all profits from the Diner going to the David Lynch Foundation – a charity set up by the award winning film director himself. Just a taster of the artists set to drop in and perform at Tim Peaks include Edwyn Collins, producer of Frankie and the Heartstrings’ debut and Orange Juice legend, who will be joining us for a weekend of DJing, drawing and a Q&A session. Edwyn released his last album Losing Sleep in 2010, on which he collaborated with last year’s fantastic festival headliners The Cribs.

The birds will likely be rolling out tracks from their newest EP in the Life of Birds series. ‘The White Edition’ was released on April 27th, and features two brand new tracks. It’s available to download free here.
