UMT (Urban Music Training) is Generator's exclusive training programme for aspiring young urban artists and is split into 3 different strands: UMT:VOX / UMT:BEATS / UMT:PLAY.
We want our UMT young people to create new music, but we also want them to record and perform this music, to set-up their own events, create CDs and short films. The idea for UMT originally came from young people - it is a free music Academy for young people aged between 11 and 24 and supported by the Big Lottery Fund.
UMT simply provides the framework - we want to support young people in the best ways possible so that they can raise their game musically, professionally and personally.
UMT:VOX is the vocalist strand to UMT - it is free but we only have 5 spaces available and will be looking for those artists who are most serious about gaining a foothold in this tough industry and taking their music to the next level.
UMT:VOX is looking for vocalists, rappers and MCs between the ages of 16-24. The 5 applicants will be matched with their own personal producer and receive over 25 hours contact and studio time.
Students will work intensively with the producer to develop a track using existing or new material - they will not only be supplied with the producer's beats, but their considerable expertise and access to their contact book. The producer will help you explore collaborative work, and give you tips about how to develop your role as a performer.
Students will not only record their new tracks, but perform them as part of a high profile UMT event and receive radio airplay. A CD featuring these tracks will be produced and distributed by Generator amongst their key A&R and industry contacts.
UMT:VOX is concerned with creating industry standard tracks, but also linking young people to this industry; in times where getting a break is so rare, this exclusive programme is set-up for those who are serious about their music and career.
Producers involved in the scheme include Wayne C. McDonald who has worked alongside Girls Aloud, Beverley Knight, India Arie and De La Soul, and Dom. P who has worked with Skinnyman and L Dot Man. These producers will not only help you create first-class work, but offer you guidance and access to valuable 'industry-inside' contacts that money simply cannot buy.
